City of Smiths Station

MAYOR & COUNCIL

The City of Smiths Station operates under a Mayor-City Council form of government.  Municipal elections are held every four years.  Council members serve at large by place.  The Smiths Station Mayor position is part-time and serves as the chief administrative officer.

Richard Cooley

Richard has called Smiths Station home for over 60 years and is a 1965 Smiths Station High School graduate. He later joined the U.S. Air Force and served a tour in Vietnam. With degrees from Auburn and Troy universities,

 

Richard spent 40 years in education as a teacher, assistant principal, principal Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent. He also serves as President of the Tan Son Nhut Association, a nationwide veteran’s organization.

 

He was one of the leaders of Smiths Station’s incorporation efforts and has served on the Smiths Station City Council since 2004.

Place 1

George Stringer

George was born and raised in Smiths Station and graduated from Wacoochee High School. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in education from Alabama State University, George taught in Russell County, then returned to Smiths Station, becoming the high school’s first African American educator. He spent 27 years at the school before his retirement in 1996. He is one of the original Smiths Station City Council members.

Morris Jackson

Morris has called Smiths Station home for most of his life. A graduate of Wacoochee High School, he went on to serve for four years in the U.S. Army, including a one-year deployment to Vietnam. He went on to work for 42 years with Georgia Power and retired from the company in 2008. Morris was heavily involved in Smiths Station’s incorporation efforts and is one of the original Smiths Station City Council members.

Steve Lansdon

Steve is a Smiths Station native and worked for 37 years at Southeastern Freight Lines, where he was a regional fleet service manager. He currently works part-time for Penske Truck Rental. Steve and his wife Susan have been married for more than 47 years.

Place 4 Council member - Dwayne Peterson

Dwayne Peterson 1SG, US Army (Ret), was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and graduated from St. Augustine High School in May of 1982. He joined the United States Army in January of 1986 and retired as a two-time combat veteran after 24 years of service. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Purdue Global in 2019. He has served on the Smiths Station Planning Commission and the Smiths Station Fire Protection District Board of Directors. Dwayne is Married to his lovely wife, Monica Peterson, of 35 years.

Victoria Green

Born and raised in Phenix City, Victoria graduated from Central High School in 1991 and obtained a Marketing degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a Master of Business Administration from Troy University-Phenix City. She worked at TSYS/Global Payments for 25 years and continues to work in the credit card processing industry today. Victoria is married to Brad Green and has three children, all attending and graduating from Smiths Station High School.  Victoria and her family actively attend Smiths Station Baptist Church.
